General Alert (Godard)

Synopsis

For "General Alert (Godard)," in which warnings of attacks on the towns of Valpovo and Belišce in Northeast Croatia are shown onscreen, Sanja Iveković selected a sequence from Jean-Luc Godard’s film "Breathless / À bout de souffle" (1959) in which the small-time criminal Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) drives a stolen luxury sedan along a typically French tree-lined country road.

Directors' Biography

Sanja Iveković is a Croatian artist working in photography, performance, sculpture, and installation. Her work addresses female identity, media, consumerism, and politics. A leading figure from former Yugoslavia, she remains an influential voice for younger generations of artists.
